Selling or trading a motorcycle that is deviated from stock is going to be a chore and very expensive. The way the used market is these days, when you "make it your own"; you own it. I've seen bikes so personalized (with liens) that the guy would be money ahead to let the bank take it.

How much does she ride? My last bike was a Road Glide Ultra. Nice bike and I liked it real well but I mostly bought a touring bike so my wife would be more comfy. I put 20,000 miles on that bike in a year and she was only on it for less than 1,000 of them. I traded it for a Heritage Softail which is better suited to the kind of riding I do. Nothing against a Road Glide but I prefer my Heritage. I did make some minor mods to improve the comfort for her but I’ve had the bike since September, have ridden it 7,500 miles and so far the only time she’s been on it was when she sat on it in the garage one time. She’s disabled so riding motorcycles is a problem for her anyway. We’ve pretty much resigned ourselves to the fact she won’t be riding much anymore, if ever, so I bought a motorcycle for me and not for her. You might want to consider that as well.

The Yamaha may have been smoother with less vibration. My wife claims that my old Vulcan rode better than any of the Harleys I have owned for that reason. My current bike is very close. You should be able to get 10k as a trade. Most likely you will loose what you have in the add ons.

I agree it makes sense to rent (before buying) a touring bike. Possibly even demo a touring or sport touring bike from another make...ex. Gold wing or BMW R1200RT. My wife still misses my old Triumph Speed Triple even though she was folded up like a toad on a mushroom, because the Triple was smooth and fast. She liked the speed and handling. The Ohlins suspension (literally) didn't hurt..

A friend told me to take out a loan for the amount of the payoff. Pay the lender to get the title, sell it privately for more than what the dealer would offer. Payoff the loan, use whatever extra for down payment. Sounds like a plan to me. Thanks, guys.
