A couple weeks ago bike was sputtering and idle dropping hard at stops and stalling if I did not give it more gas. Popping thru exhaust and sometimes intake on startup. Thought it was a bad intake leak as I knew my intake got knocked around during a recent hit and run while parked in front of house. I tore everything apart and replaced intake seals. Ride it once - was better, but exhaust still popping some and power was down. Ride it a second time and much worse - bike sputtering, but much power, almost sounds like running on one cylinder at times and practically stalling at stops. No response when I give it gas from stop until I get on gas hardand then it will jump, but runs horrible. Ran diagnostic by jumping connection under seat (2001 Fatboy EFI) and got a engine temp sensor open code. All symptoms matched symptoms of bad ET sensor. Installed new sensor and rode very short ride to work today - barely made it. Came home from work and pulled headlight nacelle to check for any pinched wires, as I had it off a couple times recently. Everything looked good. Lifted tank and looked for pinched wires and checked all sensors connections, as all this was apart for intake seal replacement. Went to start it, it will crank, but not turn over - sounds horrible. Battery was replaced about 5 weeks ago and thought his might be problem the other day while riding. Stopped in OReillys and had battery tested in bike and out of bike under load. Battery was good. I HATE electrical bullshit!
Any ideas? Still getting a open engine temp sensor code even after installing new sensor.
I would at least check coil and spark plugs. Horribly fouled plugs won't hardly get you down the street.
But why is it still showing a code, that is strange.
Mechanic who ha worked on bike called and told me to try the crank position sensor. I think I may have a spare one I can try swapping out tomorrow. I am hoping it is a simple sensor.
Sounds similar to something I experienced a while back. Mine turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator housing had cracked, which bled off fuel pressure.
You could do a fuel pressure check to rule that out or confirm it.
I recently had a similar experience that took me 3 weeks to figure out. 2003 FLSTFI. I replaced several sensors, but only one at a time. It turned out to be the engine temperature sensor. No codes. Symptoms were intermittent spitting, sputtering and stalling at all speeds including at idle. Part no. 32446-99.
