I'm Jason. I live in Tampa, FL. I just purchased my first Harley after looking for about a year. I have a 2015 Fat Boy. She came already with the Chiseled Harley Z bars and Vance and Hines pipes. I love it.
My question is regarding gear indicators. I'm really digging the Harley Gear Speed indicator: Link
Says it's fits the 2007-2010 Softail. What wiring differences were made between 2010 and 2015? With wire splicing, this shouldn't be fairly difficult to install, right? I believe it takes the measurement of your RPM vs your speed to calculate what gear you're in. As long as it's wired up, what's the difference? Anyone install one of these on a bike that it's not "specified for" ?
Well, the OEM Harley gauge cluster does have a gear indicator. But I hate that cluster. I ordered a new on today and I would really like it in the bar so I can just shift my eyes rather than tilt my head down. Im all about ease.
The way I figure it, the indicator makes an assessment of your RPMs vs speed. This is why it goes blank when one engages he clutch. The computer cannot read RPMs when the clutch is engaged and, thus, the gear speed indicator does not work. So Im unsure as to why any other indicator would not work if its properly wired into the harness.
My '15 slim has an option on the trip/odometer screen for gear/rpm. I would assume you need the same data source for this add on as your bike already has so it's not compatible.
Welcome to the board Jason. Personally, for $220 you might get more use out of a tachometer if your bike doesn't already have one. The feel of the bike and your rpm's will pretty much tell you what gear you're in.
Anyway, I'm over in Brandon and I ride just about every day. Just let me know if you wanna go.
I still would like it on the handlebars. I'll research the topic more. It's gotta be possible. I mean ... all it's doing, anyway, is hooking into the tach and speedo wiring.
Harleys use a combination of RPM and speed to determine which gear the transmission is in, What you are looking to install is a "Digital Gear Indicator" not a "Gear Speed Indicator".
The difference between 2010 Softails and 2015 Softails is the use of the CANBUS wiring. If I recall correctly, Softails got the CANBUS system in 2011. My 2012 Heritage has it. With this in mind, proceed with caution before simply tapping into or cutting wires. I'm not saying that what are wanting to accomplish won't work, only be cautious.
