Thanks for the reply pococj....I have heard from other guys who have the 42 fitted and while there is no hp gain they say the torque gain is very good and acceleration is much better.
.....but I was thinking along the same line as you.
Click on the Motorcycle Performance Guide and look in the CV section. Also check out the TC 88/95 section for data on different combinations of carbs, cams, etc.
I have tried Mikuni's, S&S, Quicksilver, much modified CV's and Dellorto's. By far the Mikuni was the best. Throttle response is greatly improved. You may not get Hp number differences but you will feel it. If I was not running my Dellorto(mostly for looks) I would not hesitate to put a Mikuni on.
Id have to agree with PocoCJ, with the why question. Your current carb will do what your wanting it to do, if properly jetted. Thats money you could put toward chrome, or rattle can paint if your Poco.

Why do any mods to your bike? You can make everything work stock. It's about MORE POWER, MORE CUSTOM, MORE PERSONALIZED, MORE CHROME, oopps sorry, got a little carried away. I will say this. The Mikuni was more noticable than any other mod done to my Roadking. That includes single fire ignition, exhaust system, and cam. Yes, the CV works good. So do the reflecters on your fenders(Those come off real easy by the way). You can get the Mikuni polished you know.
The Mikuni HSR 42 is a quality part.
It is probably overkill for any stock or mildly-tuned motor.
However, one thing any motor can benefit from the Mikuni is....throttle response.
The Keihin/H-D CV carb has poor throttle response. It's the nature of the design. You can't change it.
Once you've installed a Mikuni, you have bought your last carb. It is a firm foundation for any and all motor mods you wish to do.
