Hello, I recently acquired an 06 FLSTCI. It is a beautiful bike, and while I will probably sell it, I want to make sure I check it over thoroughly. Are there any common issues that tend to rear their ugly head on these Heritage Softail Classics I should watch out for. I know very little of the service history on the bike save for what the guy who traded it to me provided. Thanks in advance!
You don't list the mileage. But the cam tensioner shoes are a maintenance item. If you are not up to changing them yourself that can be a somewhat pricy repair.

It's due for the cam tensioners... if you resell, a knowledgeable person will inquire if they have been addressed. They will adjust what they will pay, according to which fix has been used, or none at all....
If you keep the bike, you may go 80K miles with no problem (especially later year spring tensioners), but it's the odds v the stakes... if the tensioners do go... they can, and usually will, take a bunch of other stuff with them.
Most any other problem will be able to be seen, felt, or heard, just like any other Harley, if you check the bike over carefully and take it for a good ride.....
At the very least, do a visual check of the tensioners. That is relatively easy to do and all it costs is a cam cover gasket.
Issues I've had with my '06 deluxe, in addition to the tensioners is the fuel pressure regulator housing inside the tank. It's plastic. It cracked while on a ride and fuel pressure dropped to the point it was unrideable. Fortunately I was close to home. I replaced with a Trask billet aluminum piece. This is a common failing, and why such a replacement piece is available. It's the only time the bike has failed me on the road.
Bad lifters. More of a noise thing than a reliability thing. It just clattered when it was hot. It ran OK, but I didn't like it, so I fixed it.
Two brake light switches in rapid succession. I replaced the failed original with a Drag Specialties piece. It failed a couple months later. Bought one from the dealer to replace that. Trouble free since (about two years)
So really, it's been relatively trouble free. Especially for a 12 year old bike with 62,000 miles.
