Just thought I'd share what I have, and how well I (and I alone) like it:
2007 Deuce, 5K miles later.
Love the looks of the Deuce, don't care for the handling(but I do push it a bit). Soft brakes, could use dual disks up front. Comfortable ride.
HD Sundowner seat and HD Deuce bags (don't like the looks of either, but comfortable seat and handy bags for 200+ mile rides).
Progressive fork spings, wouldn't have anything but. This is the 4th bike I've put them on.
SE air intake - a must.
Power Commander III USB - love it.
D&D slip on pipes - like the look, but too noisy for me. Will order the quiet baffles. Easy to install and nice quality.
I also use a leather product called Zymol. Water beads up on the bags and seat. Very nice.
Nice bike. Glad to see your analysis posted. Bought an 03 XLH883 this spring to see if I still had an interested in riding after 40 years out of the saddle of my 1957 650 Triumph. I do. Thought turn to next year and a bigger bike. I like the looks of the Deuce, but have never ridden one. Surprised to hear you are not impressed with the handling.
I hope other riders post their thoughts about their rides beyond Sportsters (not to say that I won't stay with a Sporty, but am looking at longer rides for next year).
The handling is pretty good. Probably a 7 - 8 on the 10 scale. It could use dual discs, an upgrade to an aftermarket system like HHI, Brembo would cure any brake issues.
