Night Train Pipes
I just purchsed my 1st Harley. I bought an '07 Night Train, but want a bit more sound out of it. Since this bike broke me buying it, I was considering removing my baffles from the stock pipes for now but am not sure if the bike would either run horrible OR if I would be hurting the engine. My friend removed his baffles from his '06 and has 25,000 miles on it, and he claims it runs great and never installed a power commander (or equivalent) nor n air filter kit. Can you give me some insight on this. I dont want to remove the baffles if it is going to make the bike run crappy, which in turn would give me no other choice but to buy the xtra's.

I'm not sure you can get the baffles out of the new pipes, at least very easy.
If you just mess with the pipes, you won't have to do anything to the ECM's mapping. Change the intake and all bets are off. Changing the intake allows more air in and then you'll run into problems with it leaning out on you. Just "fixing" the exhaust may let more air out, but without the AC being upgraded it still won't let any more air in. At worste it 'might' give you a bit of decel popping, but it won't actually hurt anything.
Removing the baffles shouldn't affect how it runs, but I would be a bit patient. The stock pipes seem to get a little louder as time goes on. At least mine seem to be, or maybe I'm just learning to tune out thewind noise better over time. Anyway its definatly getting better sounding at lower speeds, especially when your twisting the throttle hard.

I see you're an Army Vet and from NY as well. I am acitve duty Navy and from upstate NY, living in Maine for now. Thanks for your service.
I have a friend that works on Harleys and he has a 2" metal hole saw that he uses to cut the baffle and uses a slide hammer to yank the baffles out. I Don't have alot of xtra to spend to the job right, but am looking for more DB's. My last bike had 2" straight shot drags with no baffles and I love the sound.
The last thing I want to do is take the baffles out, and have the bike run crappy,, then I would have to go right down to the shop and spend money I dont have to make it right.

Thats kind of what I firgured. One person told me that the '07 were slightly different and you couldn't change a thing unless you went the whole 9 yards

The reason most people "think" you have to do so much is because they see the O2 sensor in the pipe.
They know that if you mess with it your going to have a problem with the ECM, they just don't know how or why.
Without adecentunderstanding on how the system works it becomes a little like a bit of hocus pocus, and they believe that any kind of work on it is like feeling aoundforahair triggered rat trapin the dark. One wrong move and your fingers can get snapped on really hard.
Your best bet to combat the outright wrong and missleading information that seems to all too common is to stick around here for a while. Keep looking around and reading things andyou'll soon find all kinds of good info, as well asa lot of tips onhow to work with it or around it.

Not positive but I do know the 06s only have one O2 sensor where the 07s have two sensors so you would have to use O2 eliminators or some how drill and weld a O2 bung on the pipe.

Also, I've read that SERTs will only work with the bike that it was originally configured for. Something about having to input the VIN of the bike into the software before programing the ECU... It's not a piggyback unit like the PCIII so this keeps one SERT from programing all your buddies bikes.
