Converting 1995 softail custom from forward controls to mid controls/floor boards
I finished rebuilding a buddies 1995 softail custom. Motor work, body work, exhaust, paint, suspension, gas tank, bars, roland sands rear fender kit, LA Rosa springer seat, and many more upgrades. Right now the bike has forward controls. But with the LA Rosa Spring seat and 10 inch mini apes the forward controls wont be comfortable. I want to install floor boards with the half moon floor boards. Can anyone recommend where I can buy the floor board kit which will include brackets, shifter rod, brake rod and basically everything needed besides the half moon floor boards to convert the forward controls to softail mid controls / floorboards?
No one makes mid-controls that I know of.
At one point, CCI had mid foot pegs as an alt place
to put your feet. They mounted like earlier FX foot pegs
(but no shifter or brake pedal)
An FXE brake pedal might adapt.70's FLH's had the mid primary
foot peg, which was actually a passenger peg for the buddy seat.
The first FXs had that with the
FLH shifter & the lever backwards. It made it one up and
three down though.
The other option would be , get the foot boards off the same era Heritage,
FatBoy etc. But get EVERYTHING.
I did the exact thing. Took a 1995 FXSTC and converted from forward pegs to floorboards.
Technically - while the flooboards are closer in than pegs, they are not mid controls.
It took me about 6 months to source the parts. Best bet is to find all the parts used on a Fatboy of same year. They are compatible.
Option 1: find OEM parts on ebay - some people sell entire kits or bits and pieces. I had bought a setup with about 80% of the parts but still took a while to get that other 20%.
Option 2: there were aftermarket kits - they also show on ebay from time to time. Would prefer oem.
What NOT to do - I would suggest against buying things that look like floorboards but that mount at the pegs. They will always be jacked, not comfortable, and you'll always know it's not the real deal. Some people like them - great. I tried several - disliked.
After getting the actual parts - the actual assembly was a breeze , a short night and maybe two cans of beer.
There's one offset bolt that tends to break. You can make an absolute bullet proof substitute for it very easily. Kibosh that part.
