MY 2000 fatboy has done this for about 7 years now.
i have one of those old ingniton boxes in mine thats not
timing adjustable , so I think thats what my problem is.
so, I just have learned to bring the compression up by
using the gears or just bump start the starter. Using these
methods I never get the start bang anymore. Its work ed
fir me for along time now.
Yeah i bought a new battery thinking it would fix it too, but it didnt. Brand new battery and full charged and first time it was hot same issue. You could also try starting it in gear with the clutch pulled in? Ive heard that fixed the issue for many, havent tried it myself yet.

Can you explain what your starting method is? Not sure what you mean by using the gears. Do you put it in gear then pull in the clutch to start it? If that fixed it for you then ill try it. Although i dont get that bang by not waiting before hitting the start button, ive noticed when i start it that way the idle is lower than usual...then when i put it in gear and take off the idle goes too high and stays there for a few minutes which is annoying.

Ive been doing that but it seems hard on the starter, I think my starter is getting weak? with the few modifications I have done (95'' kit, gear drive cams) the compression is a little more than the starter can handle??? I thinking a new heavy duty starter?? dont really want to do that but I am really tired of this problem.
Im gonna try acouple new things today.
1. Ive been told by a reliable source to never use the off / run switch! and only use the key switch!
2. Im gonna try bumping the starter on a hot start to see if second time works?
3. Im gonna twist the throttle a couple times before hot start to see if that helps??
thanks guys
My 04 Softail is FI. The rpm gets confused if I start it in gear. The little clutch drag from oil stuck disks tend to make it chug fwd and at least on a FI bike, the ECM gets a in motion speed sensor reading and combines it with a IAC last reading to come up with a startup idle. Mine always start 400 or so rpm high and does not loose it for a few stops or if I cut it off and restart.
I rarely start in gear but like my 4X4, on steep hills and such have done it. Of course, clutch is in on bike when I do it.
Starting in gear is not a fix in my opinion.
