Default 1994 Fatboy Speedometer Removal

Hi Everyone,

I'm new on this forum and tried to post this a couple of days ago, but it didn't go through. I hope I'm doing this right...

So here's the issue I need help with. Just got a '94 Fatboy and need to check the indicator lights in the tank dash, but I can't figure out how to get the speedometer off. It's bigger than the hole for it in the dash, so it needs to be removed to get the rest of the dash off. The problem is that I can't find where the screws are that hold it on. The other problem is that HD makes a lot of variations of these dash boards and I can't find a diagram of this particular one. Some of them have a hole on the both sides, mine only has a hole where the reset **** comes out on the right side. The reset **** is missing, so I can see into that hole, but don't see any kind of screws there to remove the speedo. There is also a gap at the top of the dash, but I don't see any screw for the speedometer in there either.

I don't even know if there is a screw holding it in, or of it just snaps into place somehow. I don't want to try and yank it off and break something.

The speedometers on most of my other bikes mount on the handlebars, so I've never had to deal with this kind of dash on the tank and my Deuce hasn't had any issues that require removing it.

So, how do I get this speedometer off the bike?

I'll attach some pictures of the dash so you know which one I have.

Thanks in advance for any help.

JA

The dash is held on by that one nut below the speedo. It looks like the speedo is bigger and has to come off first but your setup looks much like my ‘91 springer. The dash comes off first. The speedo is then held on by an e-clip on each side but the bulbs are right under the dash so you don’t need to remove the speedo anyway.

I took the nut off the dash and that's when I discovered that it wouldn't just lift off. I thought it would too, but apparently there's some trick to the whole thing.

Thanks for the reply though.

Pull the leather trim piece off, the retaining nut and the odometer reset know, then pull the dash.

Once that nut is off it will come off, there is a rubber gasket around the speedo probably a snug fit - wiggle it an pull it up and the dash will come off. There is no odometer reset **** installed so no issue there.

Yep. On my bike the rubber gasket had deteriorated, fallen apart so the dash lifted off easily.

Might be a second ring glued on the speedo rim. Mine doesn't have any white ring near the glass.
