So I if figured I get so much help from this forum my turn to give info. Wanted to clean up lower forks pitting and read how to wet sand etc...so I cheated a little but the outcome was good. I went with a 400 grit no water then jumped to a 2000 wet . I would suggest 400,800,1000 and 2000 all wet . Here are before and after total time 30min. Polished by hand BTW.

I just rubbed mine with some fine steel wool but will give your method a try.

Just keep in mind the 400 will scratch it up the 2000 wet will clean it up just keep going up and down with the 2000 wet removing any scratches dont go in circles and a black film will appear just wipe it off and 2000 again until your happy dry and chrome polish
If you a look closer to chrome, use Dupont No. 7 rubbing compound after the 2000 grit and follow up with your favorite alum/mag polish. Mothers works well.
