Posted this over in the "What did you do to your Dyna today?" But thought Id share my experience here as well.
Started with Zip Strip, local hardware store carries it. Eliminates a lot time and heavy sanding associated with the 400 grit paper to remove the clear coat. Apply it sparingly and do it twice, you may not have to but I did.
Sanded with 1000 grit up to 2000. The finer grits are mainly used to remove surface scratches caused by heavier grit, using Zip Strip I didn't experience any severe scratches so those final steps were easy.
I have/hate to admit I actually used a product call Metal Gloss & Metal Sealer ( my pop would kick my azz if heard me say that, he was big into cars & detailing and never fell for gimmick products) but I'll admit it really made the lowers pop with the final polishing. I do them a couple times a month just to keep the shine up. I've done them a few times since the initial cleaning and they just seem to shine more & more.
Trying to find a reputable coater in my area but everyone I've spoken can't seem to point me in the right direction. Theres a couple guys on FleaBay that look like they have some real nice stuff and with solid reviews.

Painting is an option as well. I did a set on a past Sporty that has 25k miles on them and they still look perfect. I just rebuilt fork on my FRX and painted those legs, trees and headlight mount, and they came out great! Paint of course isn't as durable as PC, but it's also a lot easier to repair if ever needed. It can be repaired without even coming off the bike.
Powder Pro can do them also. Bad thing of course would be sending them out, but it is an option.
I found a local before from Craigslist, don't know if that would help you or not.
