Hi I have a 2011 Heritage softail classic with high performance cam and V& H pipes. I have a starter clutch grid when I try to start it when it's hot. Some post say it's a starter clutch or compensator issue. Engine turns over a bit slower then I would like and has a 310 cca battery in it. My question is. I was told by Harley the 95 cu in engines flaw is it is too high of a compression. My thinking is, will a 400-500 CCA solve the problem and did Harley make a mistake installing a weak battery and starter for that engine which caused all these issues. Help me understand
So, you have installed high performance cam and V& H pipes and . Let me get this straight, Harley made a mistake by installing to small a battery and a weak starter?
"Harley make a mistake installing a weak battery and starter for that engine which caused all these issues."
Harley didn't cause these issues...you did. Harley didn't make the mistake...you did by improperly modifying the engine.
I put 16:1 pistons and an Acme Sooper Dooper cam in mine so I could run it on diesel. Now the starter won't spin the motor....****ing Harley
I understand what your saying with regards to the mods but if you google twin cam issues and starter clutch clunk they have the same issues and their bikes are stock. Just wondering about the high compression defect and if weak compensator springs and strater clutch problems came after. Just trying to understand since they now have better compensators now. I like the last advice about compression release valves. Thanks for taking the time to write.

Upon rereading my post, I was afraid that you might think I was just being a dick. didn't mean it that way. sorry!
The compensator was adequate (barely) for a 96 standard compression engine. I know of a few out there with 100k on the original starter. When you up the comp, problems will arise.
Your best bet, if you choose to keep those cams, is to either have a set of manual comp releases installed or got a set of slightly used 103 heads and wire the releases to the starter motor.
You could upgrade your compensator but you would not be curing anything, just treating a symptom.
With comp releases, you should have no problems
