Putrid SE IIs
I recently picked up a 2002 Softail Standard, TC88B w/ EFI. Only problem is the anemic sound coming from what look to be exhaust pipes, other than that, it is a great scoot. This thing sounds like exactly what those pansy California tree-huggers had in mind when they raped the Hawg community of its creator-ordained right to break glass with noise and cause cagers to involuntarily wet themselves. The bike came with SE IIs on stock headers... need I say more? I'm looking for loud pipes, but without too much loss in performance (I only need to be able to peel the paint off their doors, not catch them when they run away). Any suggestions?
You're right. I had SEII Double-barrels which I assume isn't terribly different than slipons. I replaced them with V&H Big Radius which won't break any windows or make anybody wet their pants, but they're plenty loud.
I made a trip to Germany recently and since I know the Germans don't take kindly to noise, I put the SE's back on. I had done the Stage 1 upgrade and I figured the SE's would perform better than the BR. I was not impressed - they took away plenty of low end power (according to the seat of my pants measurement method.)

Like I told someone else try D&D 2 in 1 FAT CAT or BOARZZILLAS, get the performance baffle and you will have MORE H.P & Tourqe! And you will get noticed! They really sound wicked when you get on itfrom light and go thru. gears on high side of R.P.M.S, and set off car alarms. PURPLE HAZE.

If you want it to sound better right now without spending the bucks on an exhaust system yet then there is a super cheap and easy way to do it. Just pull off your mufflers and install some drag pipe baffles inside the end of the header pipes. I ran my exhaust that way for over two years and it sounded WAY better than stock. I used a set of cheapo baffles but I've heard a lot of good things about the Big City Thunder Monster baffles and would probably go that route if I did it again. Doing it that way allowed me to get a better sound and retain my performance while I looked around and figured out what kind of exhaust I wanted. Exhaust systemswere justtoo expensive for me to not get it right the first time. If you want to spend some cash now thoughthen you can't go wrong with a Thunderheader. It has a great deep rumbling tonewith plenty of volume, and itwill improve your performance, especially in the torque department.
