Default Transmission Issue

Hey guys just now found this forum, my ride is a 2005 Harley Heritage Softail Springer Classic FLSTSCI. I have been having transmission issues and because of this I found this forum. My main Gear needle bearings keep walking and disintegrating on me and so far I do not know why. I had it rebuilt 5900 miles ago and it did it again, I do not want to go for three. I am thinking of replacing the entire transmission housing and all unless you guys can shed some light in this for me. I have pics if I can figure out how to post on here as a new basic member.

Thanks,

For clarity (mine) Are we talking about these bearings?

If it is the main drive gear needle bearings, it has nothing to do with the transmission case...

The inside diameter of the gear is probably out of spec.

Install a new main drive gear and bearings, or find a complete low mileage gearset.

Are you doing this work yourself?

Yes, but both bearings are inside the #10 as in your picture. There is no keeper ring nor spacer between them it is simply a friction fit.

No, I would love to do it myself but until I get a little more experience and knowledge I am having a very well respected local mechanic do it for me. I am considering putting a Screaming Eagle 6 speed complete transmission housing and all in it but don't really want to shell out that kind of money unless I have no choice.

Put the main drive gear kit from baker in it. A little pricey but worth it. Don't neglect the bearings in the trap door too. Obviously the inner primary bearing and race should be taken care of too while you're in there. I have no idea what your mechanical abilities are but it's not a really hard job...its more having the speciality tools than anything else. With a factory service manual and alot of help from a fellow forum member ( nomadmax), I did my main drive gear bearing two seasons ago with bakers rebuild kit...been trouble free since. Good luck with the bike.

That is what my mechanic is recommending, go to the Baker 6 speed. I didn't want to spend that kind of money at the moment but I guess for piece of mind that is what I am going to do. I am just worried there could be an issue with the housing, spending this kind of money just to have an issue later because
I didn't replace the housing would kill me.

Do the Baker OD 6. Same gear ratios as the 5 speed plus an overdrive. Can be had as a kit to install in your 5 speed housing. Comes in 2.94 or 3.15? low gear. ~$2300 list plus install.

Spending 3 grand on a Baker transmission to fix a failure of a 200 dollar part is ludicrous.

Just have your mechanic replace the main drive gear and the needle bearings that go inside it, also the big ball bearing.

If you end up replacing the main drive gear, I would recommend using our high torque bearing as well. This eliminates the inner bearing race issue, which, as we all know, can move in or out causing leaks.

I can also tell you about the OD6 and DD6 if you are interested. Both would be great for you, but not exactly what you need for this repair.
