The confusing part is that the bike looks like it's in excellent condition, minus some dust from sitting the engine looks and sounds great, the engine itself is very clean, no rust anywhere on the bike, no scratches or dents (Except on the exhaust from it being leaned too far over). I'm not sure the degree of repair needed for a totaled vehicle, but this particular bike makes it hard to believe it's anything but clean. That's why I needed the clarification

Generally speaking, an insurance company will "total" a vehicle whenever the cost to repair it reaches a pre-set percentage of the bike's value.... Different Ins Co. will use different percentages...

Additionally, some insurance companies will total a vehicle if their is any (even slight) damage to the frame. I've seen one totaled when the tab between the front down tubes, that the engine guard attaches to, gets bent...

Unless you find the guy who rebuilt it, you'll never know the extent of the damage... it could have 80% new parts, or 20% new parts, or combo of scrap yard parts and new parts... who knows....

A talented painter/mechanic can take a basket case and make it look good... all depends on how much time & money the person who rebuilt it was willing to invest in the bike....

If you like it, and it runs well.... keep it...!! Then all the horror stories about trying to sell a salvaged bike won't matter....

Sounds like your a new rider and worried about "too much bike". Take a beginner motorcycle safety class and get basic riding skills. Get your permit and then try putting some time on the Heritage in parking lots and back roads.
You may be surprised that the bike only feels heavy at a dead stop and with some practice you will learn to deal with that. If you are inclined to start riding and already have the bike, its not worth selling if it runs well and you like it its worth more to you than you will ever get due to its age.
