I took mine off too. I like to change position of my feet on the boards, especially on long rides. Damn heel shifter was always in the way. I got my chrome cover from HD.
I too found it useless and in my case dangerous. I wear baggy pants (look at my signature below) and a few times the hem of my pants leg got caught on the heel shift. This happend at a stop and I almost dropped the bike cause I couldn't get my left leg on the ground. I took the heel shift off an bought a cap at the dealer.
I'm too old and set in my ways to learn to use the heel shifter on my '03 Fatboy and I would like to take it off. I'm concerned about how it would look. Does anyone make a chrome cover for the end of the rod?
Theres not much to learn in using a heel shifter, you click it down with your heel to upshift, and then you still have to click down with your toe to down shift.
