The beauty of biking is to each his own. My 07 deluxe has one and to say the least Iwas pretty skeptical but the salesman said to try it and you will like it...Well u can teach an old dog new tricks!!!! Now I love it and certainly understand that old habits die hard...BE SAFE if not comfortable don"t use it!!!!
I love the heel shifter. My first Harley ever (Deluxe) had it and my first question to the salesman was "can you please take that off?" Like the poster above, I was told to give it a shot. I tried it...me likes it!
I took the heel shifter off on day one. Have never owned a bike with a heel shifter and frankly don't see the point ... makes for a lot more room to "stretch out" on the boards too.
If you're concerned about the effort required to shift gears, I suggest replacing the mickey mouse stock shift linkage with something a little more beefy and don't forget the rod ends either. Stock parts are also mickey mouse. A quality rod end like Landmark Mfg. http://www.landmarkmfg.com/Content_Pages/Rod_End_v2.htm will make for a much smoother and more solid shift.
I've had some bad experiences with the Pro-One stuff, so I wouldn't recommend them ...
