I'm too old and set in my ways to learn to use the heel shifter on my '03 Fatboy and I would like to take it off. I'm concerned about how it would look. Does anyone make a chrome cover for the end of the rod?
There's plenty of aftermarket covers out there - just do some searching on the net to ifnd what you like. But, for what it's worth, I love having the heel shifter - it took a little getting used to, but I don't think I'd go back now! In fact, the only time I use the toe shifter is when I put the bike in "N"
I too never use the heel shifter and will be eliminating it soon. Hopefully while I'm in Carlisle this weekend I'll find something that'll work but yeah, there are heel shifter eliminator pieces out there.
You ain't that old. I thought the same thing. Then somthing happen. I got used it. Really, give it a chance. Besides , a Harley don't shift like a Jap bike. Takes a little more effort. So the heal shift is easier. Les
Same here, as it was the first thing I removed from my FatBoy.
Been riding with just a 'toe shifter' since the early 1970's, and I'm too old to learn new tricks. I was constantly 'bumping the heel lever' with my foot, and when putting my foot down I had to remember not to step on the rear lever.
I removed the 'heel portion, raised the toe lever up slightly, and now I'm good to go.
Harley makes a 'Shift Cover with Insert' to those of us that remove the heel shifter. It's PN 35495-06.
(BTW, hang on to the heel shifter, as it's the same lever that is used for the toe shifter. Good to have around as a spare.)
For my FatBoy I got a chrome shifter sleeve from Kuryakyn. You take your rear shifter off and move the front shifter out to where the rear shifter was and put the chrome sleeve where the front shifter was on the shaft. Looks good.
I removed my heel shifter and used the chrome cover that HD had in stock. I never could remember to use the heel shifter and like the extra room I have without it.
