The lowers are put on with two bolts on the sides of the forks. I wouldn't want to be taking them on and off very often, as you run the risk of stripping or cross threading one of the bolts. Other than that, they go on and off fast and easy.
I have not noticed the heat being worse or better with or without them, but some might have different experiences.
Does anybody have an HD part number for the chrome covers discussed?? Just got a HD detachable windshield and tried it out for the first time today. Had two problems - need to cut it down a bit and the head buffeting. Does anybody have a good rule of thumb of how much to cut off the top?? Many thanks
I cut mine off three inches. It was a little too much. I suggest that you mark where you want to cut as you are sitting on the bike. If I could do it over again, I would cut off about 1" below my line of sight. Also, IMO, the HD chrome wind deflectors are much better than some of the aftermarket brands. Mine were about $70. Sorry, I don't have the part number. I do remember a part number from a previous post by Billnourse.

I took mine off after getting a JAcks Flapps vest, it works good too. Vest do not deflect as much wind as the fork mounted deflectors, but it does work just about as good, and sure as hell makes my bike look better with out them deflectors on it.
