Default Outlaw Forward Controls

I have the Outlaw forward controls on my 2001 Fatboy. I like them, but notice the shifter throw to change gears is pretty long. What would I have to change to shorten the throw? Longer or shorter shift lever? Are there any brands that are known for having a shorter throw?

Your perception. The throw doesn't change because you have a longer linkage.

Definitely not perception - there was a noticeable change in throw from the forward controls I had on bike before and these. Unfortunately, it has been probably 9 years since I changed them and don’t remember what brand controls were on the bike when I bought the bike. They could have been performance machine or Rizoma. I had forward controls on my last bike also, and am getting them confused.

It's impossible to have changed the throw, the shifter arm (unless stripped) only moves so far at the transmission end.

if a noticeable difference, it would have to be in length of shift arm I'd reckon
longer arm would have a longer arc at the end to travel ....I "think"....

When I mentioned shifter lever in first post, I was referring to the shifter on the foot control, not the transmission shift lever. I would guess a longer shifter at the foot control would reduce the force needed to change gears but increase throw. Would a shorter arm reduce throw?

Yes, a shorter arm would reduce the amount of travel. But also the leverage and pressure needed to shift.
Think pry bar, the longer the lever the less force you need.

Kind of embarrassed, but I removed the shift lever/peg, rotated so peg is closer to floorboard, and reinstalled. I must have it set kind of high for some bigger boots I had in past, then later I adjusted the floorboards, and it all resulted in a long reach to the shifter peg and a long throw on the shifter. I kept missing 2nd gear and hitting neutral when shifting into 2nd, and it was really aggravating. The Outlaw controls have a splined shift lever, so it took less than 2 mins to adjust. Rode yesterday for about 150 miles and did not miss a shift at all. Upshifts were tight and much quicker. I don’t why I did not think of adjusting the peg height ... oh well, it shifts much better and did not cost me anything, so I am happy!
