Default Saddlebag lid removal

Has anyone removed the lid from the stock leather bags on a FLSTC or similar bag and reattached it? I see it has 1 rivet on each end and sewn to the backing in between them. I'd like to remove it from my left bag but be able to easily put it back on say with velcro and 1 small round head nut/bolt on each end for easy removal again without being able to see it. I'm pretty sure this will work.
My dog wants to ride and he fits perfectly in the bag.

Maybe look for a saddle bag with a "battle scar" to experiment on ... and if "Fido" tears it up a bit, no loss right ?

Good point. I did take him around the block for the first time the other day. Tied the lids together to keep them open. He did good for his first time and didn't freak outbbor try to bail.

Oh and why's that? Lot of dogs ride. I figured him to like it but want to be sure before I go thru all the trouble. Been doing dry runs getting him use to the bags for months.
As you can see, the lid has to go.

I have seen dogs ride in all kinds of ways, including sitting on the gas tank, although I wouldn't do that, If the dog is secure an comfortable in the bag, I don't see what in not politically correct?
You can buy a pet carrier designed for a motorcycle that would possibly be a solution but your dog may be a bit large.
I'm sure you will make sure your dog is secure.
If your best option is the saddle bag, you could remove the lid and refasten with a row of snaps. I personally would prefer to velcro.

I don't know about being "politically correct" or not... I dislike that term and most of what it stands for... but IMHO... it's a bad idea...

I love dogs and have owned several. I currently own two dogs... They are Great Danes, so riding on one of my bikes isn't even a remote consideration...

I think it's a bad idea because:

The dog is being put at greater (needless) risk.. Yes, no matter how you secure your dog on a bike, it is much more dangerous for the dog on a motorcycle than in a car... Riding on motorcycles is more dangerous than riding in a car for anybody... We are capable of making that risk/benefit choice, the dog is not...

It's entirely possible, even probable, that the dog may love being on the motorcycle... wind in their face is a big plus for most dogs... but there are many things dogs would LOVE to do if we let them... we are supposed to be the smart ones in a dog/person relationship. We are supposed to look out for the welfare of the dog

Dogs love... and many people think it's perfectly OK to let their dog ride loose in the back an open pick-up truck. Every owner who had a dog die because it fell, or jumped, from the open bed of a pick up truck, was convinced that for their dog, it was a safe thing to do.... right up until it killed their dog..

I believe that making the choice to take a dog for a ride on a motorcycle, is done more for the owner... not for the dog... The owner wants to look cool, be cool, "be that guy" with the dog on his bike...

I am not trying to preach to or belittle anyone who makes the choice to take their dog on their motorcycle... I most certainly believe that most dog owners care greatly about their dogs, and have the best intentions in whatever decisions they make for their dogs....

I see these threads from time to time, and thought that this time, I would share my opinion on the subject... I'm just offering an opposing opinion, and the reasons why I feel it's a bad idea...

Everyone is free to do whatever they believe in their hearts is good for their dog(s)...

Be safe...

PS- For my part, I am content to let my dogs hang out with me in my little bike workshop... but that's as close as they get to my motorcycles...

As I said earlier “bad idea” I didn’t go into any detail like you did which by the way was well put. I agree completely. When I read the OP answer to my “bad idea” post I just figured the use of any reason went out the window.
You said it all when you said it’s not really for the dog but more often to bring attention to oneself, a good old attention getter.

The OP is certainly entitled to his opinion.....

Like I said, I wasn't trying to preach, just share an opposing opinion as food for thought....

I'm sure there are as many people who disagree with what I said, as those who agree with it...

I expected to be flamed... just glad there is at least one other who agrees with me...
