Hey guys, I've done several searches and found several good threads, but what are the first things I should consider looking for on this new to me 03 FLSTF. This is the carburetor version and the carb has been changed to a Mikuni HSR. This bike has had some motor work done by Dyno Mike in Belton, MO. Previous owner is locating all that paperwork for me for the details. I know that cam chain tensioners is the obvious first check, what is the best course of action for a guy on a budget? which cam plate do I switch to? My thing is, if I switch plates or even pull the plate, gotta pull the cams, which means replace the pushrods with quickies or pull the rockers. Can get into a lot of money right off the bat. Do I just check the shoes and run 'em? Does the rear tensioner shoe get worn as bad as the front one? Can I get by with not checking the rear one? If I do have to pull the cam plate, what is the most economical replacement? Thanks in advance for the advice!
The stock cam plate does not need to be changed, it is more than adequate.
How many miles on the bike?
Inspect the shoes and if they show significant wear, replace with Cyco shoes, they are of different material and will last longer.
While in there doing that, replace the inner bearings with Torrington bearings.
The rear shoe can be inspected with a dental mirror.
