Default Question

HBi all,

I did do a google search but really didn't come up with anything so I will ask here

Can the Comp sprocket on a 2003 softail go bad? I see all over the place about touring bikes but not softails.

Is it can, what are the symptoms?

The spring pack on Reaper (2005 Night Train)'s comp wore out after 14 years and about 160,000 miles. It caused a hell of a rattling sound, and weird noises now and then on startup. The rest of the compensator components were fine, but I replaced the entire unit anyway.

Cheers!

Truely rare for Belville springs to go bad. Unlike a coil spring that can stretch or compress past it's elastic limit, Belville have little motion.

I have seen the welded unit broken apart on here once.
Seen similar system where I worked on NC machines that had auto tool changers. Tooling was held in by Belville springs pulling on a re-tension ****. They cycled 100s of time a day for years.

Also, a comp really only smooths the impulses from a uneven firing v-twin. So no big deal. If it makes noise at idle, it's the 3 fingers a little rough. Hurts nothing.
