Haven't had that happen, but last week I was in the dealer in Syracuse NY and they had about 6 Wideglides on the floor. Well I knew that they were not going to be around too long so I decided to see how one felt to sit on. So I threw a leg over a really sweet one with one of the HD custom paint sets on it.
Now I know the forward controls are just a hair too far forward for me but I HAD to try it. So I stood the bike up andpicked up my left foot toput it on the peg BIG MISTAKE!
The bike started to tip back over to the left and when I went to put that foot back down my shoe lace had looped over the shifter. Lucky for me I had not picked up the jiffy stand and it stopped it from falling over on top of my leg andthe bike next to it. SCARED THE CRAP OT OF ME!!!!
Now if I'm not wearing my zip up HD boots I make DAMN sure any loose laces are tucked into the shoe or sneaker tops before I get on a bike.
I got used to the heel-toe shifter a few years ago, but I have to say that with size 12 boots there is still not enough room on these floorboards. I've caught my pants on the shifter a couple times, but fortunately not when I need to put my foot down really fast. I think the secret is muscle memory, once you get used to the heel shifter you'll probaly want to keep it and that means you'll have to learn how to work around it. If you take it off now, and especially if you're not used to it, then you won't miss it.
Oh yeah ... Kuryakyn makes an extended shifting lever (around $72 retail, if I recall), and since the toe and heel are basically the same then you can extend the full range around 2.5 inches or so (for under $145). I might consider it about the same time I put long boards on.
Lower the rear shifter one spline tooth and it should be about an inch off the foot rest. Your heel of your boot should now rest against it and it should be impossible to catch your pants leg in it. The way they set them up at the dealer with the rear shifter so high makes it a pain to use and you could get it caught on a pants leg.
Itook the heel shifter off and put the cap piece on... Is it supposed to fit loose. The small allen bolt that goes on the cap fits in the groove on the shifter and it holds it in place...but it is loose? Did they give me the wrong part???
NO! It should not be loose. Mine is on tight. Yourallen bolt is not turned in far enough. When I bought mine,it also was loose. I had to take the blue locktite off of the bolt and make sure the bolt went all the way thru the cap. Then I put some new blue liquid locktite on it before I tightened it up. Now it is tight and does not move. Hope this helps.
