Default 1st gear travel

My 09 Heritage softail travels 2¾ inches while in 1st gear with the motor off and measured from the rear axle, marked straight down on a piece of cardboard. I pushed the bike back, marked it, pushed it forward and marked it. Distance was 2¾ inches. Is this normal travel? I have a stock clutch with a Baker compensator and about 200 miles on a new chain. If not normal, what should I check first?

You sure it's not 2 5/8" go back and check. I've never even thought about that, welcome to the forums though !

PS, wrong area for that question also.

"they all do that"

I suspect you never owned anything with a manual transmission before?

Alone, how far it travels in 1st gear with the motor off is not important. That number, 2-3/4" must be compared to how far it goes in 1st gear with the motor on. The ratio is what is important.

Do you know if the Spurthing bearings were lubricated when the Baker compensator was installed?

Welcome to the forums,

it’s called drive train slack. Forgive me if I don’t measure mine. If it works fine with the motor on and going forward….don’t worry about it.
