I have only been enjoying this Deluxe for a few days but have contacted the "boards" or mounts for the boards a few times while cornering, way more clearance on my Night Train. Is there any mod out there to correct how low this seems to be?
Is there a lowering kit installed? If so obviously you could go back to stock. Im an auto tech now but i spent some time at a motorcycle shop as a tech. Most of the bikes with boards even road queens when ya put them up on the lifts, just about all of them had some scrapes on the boards and mounting components. Make sure tire pressures are to spec its amazing how much clearance you can lose with soft tires. Also, you could try adjusting the shocks a little stiffer that will take out some bounce that might cause an occasional bottom out. In fact, front fork springs can get weaker as the bike accrues miles. You could throw in some springs and use screamin chicken fork oil which is heavier than the E weight it comes stock with.
Assuming everything is stock, you may be riding more aggressive than the bike is meant to be ridden. If you like leaning in the curves then maybe the Deluxe isn't the right bike for you.
Add one turn of preload to the rear shocks if they are at the softest setting. That will gain a bit of clearance, but just barely. If you carry a passenger, go 3 turns. There are threads that give you the exact recommendations based on your weight.
As said above, Deluxes are 1 inch lower stance than most softails. You can change the shocks to either HD's at regular length or other aftermarket brands and gain that lost1 inch back and more lean angle. I scrape my boards on corners and round-abouts going at very sedate speeds too, so I will likely change the suspension on my (new to me this year) 2006 Deluxe.
Even if you are at OEM shock adjustment, the 2007 Deluxe has less lean angle than the 2009 Night Train.... The Deluxe has 3° less lean angle on right turns and 8° less lean angle on left turns...
2009 Harley Night Train lean angle (per SAEJ1168): 31°/ 34°
2007 Deluxe lean angle (per SAEJ1168): 28° / 26°
You can maximize the preload on the shocks, but not sure how much that would help, and it will ride like a rock....
As someone said, the Deluxe is not designed as a canyon carving bike...
