Default taking apart rear shocks

Has anyone taken apart the rear shocks to install a lowering kit. I have purchased the arlen ness kit and it says to compress the shock and remove the inner rings with a pick while it is compressed. Any tips? Has anyone done this and how much difference does it make to the look.

thank
