Cleaning Pipes
I have the same issue and am about to try one of those "magic erasers." They are a non-abrasive cleaning "sponge" that my wife SWEARS are up to the task.
Want to be the first to try? Let me know how it goes, or if I happen to get to it tonight, I'll post my results.

My daughter did the same thing and somehow, i wont admit to it, my MP3 player hit the pipes and its plastic cover melted before I could say oh s***! I used "Perma Seal". My dad had the stuff and gave it to me. It sat in the garage for some time since it didnt really seem worthy of anything. Man was I wrong, Although its not the easiest stuff to use, man does it work. To use the stuff you got to wet a part of the towel, dip it into the powder and make a paste out of what comes out. Rub on and polish with the rest of the towel. You cant even tell the plastic/rubber was burned into the pipe and I aint gonna tell either. I use it all the time now. Just my 2cents.

As stupid as this sounds, I go for a ride and when the pipes/muffler is hot I just wipe it off. No fuss, no muss, and seems to alway work for me. Doing it cold is a pain in the a$$ as it won't come off without elbow grease.

Blue Job chrome cleaner is made for these type of problems. The marketing materials say it won't scratch. It's a powder -- and you dip a damp cleaning cloth into the powder, make a paste, then polish and buff. The first time I used it, it scratched a little. Since then, I made the paste much thinner (more water, less powder) and it hasn't scratched.
I got it from hawgwash.com, which is a great website for detailing products.
Good luck.
