Default Harley Davidson Speedometer/Tachometer fuel level reading problem

I have a Harley Davidson Performance Combination Speedometer/Tachometer KMH # 70900071A Gauge, and have had it on my bike for around 8 years and everything has worked great but, recently the fuel level indicator bars have been stuck on Half way even with a full tank.
The low fuel indicator light icon does still work.
I also have a flush tank mount kuryakyn Fuel/Battery gauge and the fuel level indicator light bars work fine and show a full tank, when full, and lowers as i use fuel accordingly so all good there so, I know it's not the fuel level sender unit float getting or being stuck.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why my Harley Davidson Speedometer/Tachometer gauge # 70900071A fuel level indicator bars would be stuck on Half way

I just looked at the install directions for that Speedo unit. If I read it correctly, the fuel gauge in the speedo is based on the "miles to go" signal from the ECM.... The fuel gauge on the tank, is based on the position of the float...

Did you recently disconnect your battery....??

From the install instructions:

"After the battery is reconnected or a new gauge is installed, the gauge requires about a half tank of fuel to initialize fuel range (miles to empty) functionality.

During consumption of the first full tank of fuel, the gauge software begins the process of learning your riding patterns, eventually tailoring the fuel range calculations to your unique riding characteristics.

The fuel level display and tank-mounted fuel gauge may not always match when starting with a full tank of fuel. The tank fuel gauge utilizes a continuous sweep needle to indicate fuel level, while the speedo/tach fuel level utilizes a segmented display. Each segment represents 1/8 of a tank. For example; if a given segment just came on or is about to go off, it would show no change, while the needle on the tank-mounted gauge would likely show a change in position."

If a recently disconnected battery is not the issue, then check the connector at the speedo for a corroded pin.... Also trace the wires back to the ECM looking for a pinched, broken, or frayed wire....

Good luck with the repair..

Thanks hattitude,

i did read that info in the manual and yes i did empty and remove the tank off my bike and yes i did disconnect my battery.

I did fill my tank up on my first ride after tank and battery was installed back onto my bike.

Do you think that I should have only run a half a tank of fuel to initialize fuel range correctly or would a full tank have been fine to initialize the fuel range correctly?

I see that at the manual states 'the fuel gauge in the speedo is based on the "miles to go" signal from the ECM.... The fuel gauge on the tank, is based on the position of the float..'. so looking at the picture that I included in my post, which is identical to the position of the fuel level indicator bars on my speedo/Tachometer, why does the fuel levels have a E for empty, 1/4,3/4 and F for full, that sort of contradicts the manual statement, don't you agree?

I will re check the connectors but everything on my bike is well looked after and maintained and I know that there is no corrosion on any of my plug pins.

Do you think that any of the pins may be bent or not positioned correctly in the male side of the plug? , as i have unplugged the speedo plug quite a few times when taking off my console for various reasons.

I do not agree. There is no contradiction. It matches exactly what the manual says. Each light represents 1/8 of a tank and there are 8 lights.
When no lights are on the tank is empty = E
When the 1st two lights are on that is 1/8 x 2 = 1/4 tank
When 4 lights are on that is 1/8 x 4 = 1/2 tank (where the gas pump icon is)
When 6 lights are on that is 1/8 x 6 = 3/4 tank
When 8 lights are on that is 1/8 x 8 = full tank (F)

The only difference with the speedo/tach combo is how the the ECM determines the fuel level. You were correct in using a full tank for the ECM to recalibrate the fuel level. It may take consuming half a tank for the fuel level to correct itself.

Pins getting corroded does not mean you are aren't maintaining your bike. It happens. Pull the speedo connector and check the pins to make sure there is no problem. Do you use dielectric grease on the connector? If so, don't apply the dielectric grease to the pins themselves. It is a non-conductive grease. Apply it around the connector to prevent water and contaminants from entering the connector. Check the female side of the connector as well to make sure there is no debris or dielectric grease (if used) preventing the pins from making good contact.

I have the same speedo/tach set up on my Slim S and just recently my low fuel indicator(DTE) quit working. Is it a problem with the actual head unit or a wiring issue?

Glad it's fixed....

Probably just needed to reset its calibration with a tank of fuel, after having the battery disconnected...
