Default oil cooler gasket

a general question... I am going to intall the HD oil cooler on my Softail tomorrow. I was looking through the directions (i know we aren't supposed to do that!) and was wondering about what to use to keep the gasket in place when i install the oil cooler adapter. I have permatex gasket sealer, is this safe to use? The directions don't mention using a sealant and I can't see how one could keep the gasket in place without it.

I didn't use sealer and don't recall needing any or having trouble with the adapter. Hold the gasket with one hand and the adapter with the other. Once together, thread the adapter bolt thingie with your other hand, freed after holding the gasket. Warning: The adapter bolt thingie (whatever it's called) requires and 11mm or 7/16" Allen socket or wrench. This size is on the endangered species list and the chances of having one in your tool kit is about one in 100000. Take a bolt with 7/16" head and lock two nuts onto the other end. Then you can torque the adapter thingie that way. Or, find a 7/16" OD threaded rod coupler, but I've never been able to find one of these.

but I've never been able to find one of these.
I do believe a brake caliper socket will work.

But here's a link for getting one cheap

Default RE: oil cooler gasket

I used Permatex Hylomar dressing (not sure if it is sold anymore, seems like I read there were trademark issues or something)

I used this to guarantee no leaks

Default hylomar and oil cooler

better late than never. I too found out about Hylomar just now. I installed the HD oil cooler. Instructions said to remove a backing tape if teh gasket was light colored. Well, it was, but there was no tape. I installed without gasket sealer, as the instructions did not call for it. I torqued.
2 days later, I see it is leaking. So I head out to the dealer in Corinth, TX (I've had pretty good luck with that bunch). The tech says to use their Hylomar. It sells for about 14 bucks. It doesn't say Permatex anywhere; it just says Hylomar. it is the stuff described in the Hylomar web site in UK, I think. Anyhow, I have a new gasket now, and I'll stick it on there like the techs do. I expect no more problems after that (they haven't led me wrong yet).

Too bad MOCO is not listening to the techs and putting this valuable info on their instructions in the first place. I'm not going to worry about it, I learned something new and it was a fairly inexpen$ive lesson.
