Default oil cooler gasket

just finished installing the hd oil cooler on my 07 eg. i noticed the instructions mention that you may have a gasket with an adhesive side to stick to the adapter or you may have one that does not. as far as i could tell mine did not have the adhesive side, tried to peel the surface of both sides of the gasket and could not get it&nbsp\\;to peel so i assumed it was not the adhesive gasket. has anyone here got one of these kits with the adhesive gasket? is it a better gasket or just has the adhesive to help hold the gasket in place during installation? which gasket is the current gasket being used in these kits by hd? the box my cooler came in was dated 03-03-08 so i assume i have the latest gasket?

Mine did not have the adhesive.I did however spray Permatex Copper adhesive/sealant on both sides.

Careful with those gaskets . H.D. does not sell the gasket for cooler by itself. If you need a new one you may have to make it.

Someone on here a couple weeks ago said there is a DIY fix for the oil cooler as a result that some have leaked. I could not find it, but tried as I am going to install the kit as well.

the only problem i had with mine was keeping the gasket in place till i had the adapter snugged up. if your gasket is not the peel and stick type be sure you use some type of gasket sealer or something that will be good to stick the gasket to the adapter before you install, it will be alot easier that way, even if you have to glue the night before so it has time to dry. wish i had read that tip before i did mine.

The label on my cooler box was dated 5-23-08. No adhesive on my gasket. I made sure mine was centered with the circumferance of the adapter. Wished I had used some high temp sealant because now I have a drip. One drip shows up on my garage floor overnight and can feel a little oil on the bottom of the mounting plate. May be dripping more than that rate while riding as the system is under a certain amount of pressure. May have to end up removing adapter and put a new gasket on. Can't order the OEM gasket separately, so may have to make one. That shouldn't be too difficult. Any ideas out there as to what to do here? Will first try torquing the adapter mounting fitting a little more first. Used the three 1/4" nuts on a bolt trick. The torque spec is only 12-16 ft-lbs so I'm sure I got that torque with the nut and bolt trick. May end up looking for a 7/16" hex key.

The gasket cant be bought seperatly?
You could always by some gasket material and cut your own or remove the old gasket and clean with acetone and let dry. Then apply some sealant. The copper spray I used goes on nice and even.
As far as the 7/16 hex wrench,I cut one that I had so I could use it in a socket.Made it easier to use a torque wrench.

1FL, according to the parts table in the cooler instructions they are "not sold separately". But I'll check at the HD dealer but I would expect they will just look in the book and see the same answer. As far as using the old gasket, I would half expect that it'll be pretty much damaged in trying to get it off one of the surfaces, but maybe not. Making a replacement shouldn't be too difficult. Just need to get the correct material for that application. I would think an Autozone would have it. Do you remember where you got the hex key? I've searched on line a little and haven't seen one at the normal places(Sears, etc.).

Sears online-item#00971541000 $6.99
Tools Plus $2.28
I'm sure one could be found at a Napa,etc-
You could also use a 7/16 external hex socket.
