I recently got a 93 softail Custom FSXTC. The bike was sitting for a few years.
I determined the starter needed to be replaced, I ordered the entire starter.
I’m now removing the old starter, it’s completely loose however it will not pull all the way out. It comes out about 1”-2”, I begin to feel resistance and if I let go it pulls back in slightly. Almost as if a spring is holding it.
Have to open the primary and pull the long bolt in the end of the bendix gear. Be careful not to drop the spined coupling as the starter pulls out. You can see 1/4" bolt in this vid.
