Disappointing to see attitudes who think this is OK, or that the deal isn't sealed until it's in writing with a deposit. Sad state of affairs these days - everyone should be on notice from this thread that they need to cover their butts in future dealings.

I myself would seriously consider at least taking her to small-claims court to get reimbursed for the expenses. The emotional intercourse of having the deal fall through is one thing, but paying out cold, hard cash for the rental and travel costs are an additional punch in the stomach that I couldn't accept. If she made extra money on the deal, then I guess some feel that's her right. If it cost you hard dollars trying to honor your end and complete the deal, then you should share in her windfall at least to the extent of your costs.

Figure it the other way - if she had agreed on the sale, and was delivering the bike to you, but you backed out when she was around the corner because you found an identical bike for $2k less, how would she feel??? Would she accept that she was out of pocket for the expenses? I doubt it.

Thats a damn good point tunaman.

Excellent point, I totally agree. I think most of us here agree that a "verbal" is good enough, I hope that never changes. Bottom line (for me), shame on her!

That sounds like it could be a sales trick to get more $ at the last minute when the customer is committed to the sale. I wouldn't be surprised if you got a call in a few days saying the other buyer "backed out".

I may be paranoid but I've seen these sort of tricks played before at car dealers.
I'm almost hoping that's what she was doing. I had no more to give her. Like I told her in the nice e-mail I sent to her when I got home, I wasn't trying to cheat herwith the low offer. I simply offered her what I could afford, & she accepted it. If she wanted more for the bike, she should have stuck to her original price. I would have accepted that & moved on. Hey, wait . I did do that & she got back intouch with me 2 weeks later to say she would take my offer. Yep, she's a pig!! Oh well, life goes on. Maybe I'll get back in touch with the guy that has the 2000 springer.classic.

Why not save the rest of the money and buy the bike you'd really like to own.

Just read it again and noticed that it was a dealership... I'd be launching a campaign of bad publicity against them myself until they reimbursed me for costs, or I felt that I had impacted their business sufficiently. But that's just me - I can be vindictive and hard-headed.
No it wasn't a dealership. She had won the bike on a raffle & was simply having the dealership store it for her until she got it sold. That's just where I was supposed to pick it up. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that.
My guess is that when she gotto the dealership& told them that she had the bike sold for 14 k, they probably told her she could get more for it. I wouldn't doubt if the dealer bought it back from her, (they were the ones who furnished the bike for the raffle in the first place),after they found out she was willing to let it go cheap. Maybe I'll give them a call & see if they have any black 07 heritages left. I know for a fact thatthe one I was buyingwas the only one they had Friday when I stopped in to see the bike.

I can read thru this and pick out a few people I'd never want to do a deal with!

It used to be "a man's word was his bond." Well, we gots wimmen's lib now so it is hereby updated to "a person's word is their bond." I don't care if it's a piece of chewing gum all the way through the King Ranch, an agreement is an agreement. To back out of a verbal agreement, a handshake deal, or any kind of deal is wrong. As far as I'm concerned anyone doing such a thing is not an honorable person, and their word is worthless.

I can't believe someone defending any part of this.

Sad . . . .

I my self would never take a verbal as a deal . i did this once turned down another offer as i had promised the bike to a caller who said i am taking it only to find out this jerk never showed. that was the last time that ever happened . my policy now is who ever shows up with the cash first has it . end of story
