Default First Post, First Harley

Good day everyone! I’m seeking advice on the potential purchase of an ‘06 Deuce with 4,500 miles. The guy bought it in 2011 and now his son is selling (not sure if dad or what). Going to see it tomorrow and would appreciate any guidance. I know I’ll have to get tires/tune up from the dealer to check it out. No service records that the some can find.

Thoughts.

Brian

The main issue with the pre-2007 softails will be the spring cam tensioners....

That design proved to be problematic and it needs to be addressed. If the tensioners fail, they will cause much damage... The tensioner upgrade cost, if done by a shop, can run $800 to $2500 depending on which "fix" you choose, there are 4 different levels of upgrades... If you search "cam tensioner" you will get pages of reading to educate yourself on the issue.

Bottom line, if the bike has them done... ask to see receipts to know how they were addressed, and by who... If there are no receipts for the work, I consider them un touched for purposes of price negotiating. I'd knock $1500 off just for the cam tensioners, then start nit picking other issues...

While it's certainly a seller's market right now, there are many with inflated opinions of what their bikes are worth... some people will fall for an owner's assessment of value, and educated buyer will walk... there are too many good, used bikes on the market to overpay...

Per Black Book Powersports:

Year: 2006
Make: Harley-Davidson
Model: FXSTDI Softail Deuce
Model Type: Cruiser
Displacement: 1450
Cylinders: 2
VIN: 1HD1JBB16
Finance Advance: $5,665
MSRP: $17,220
Avg Retail: $6,795
Auction Wholesale $5,630
Clean Trade: $5,360
Fair Trade: $4,610

In my opinion, that average retail price of $6,795 includes a generous adjustment for today's market. I wouldn't pay over $7K for a Deuce in excellent condition, with full service history/records, good DOT tire dates, and the cam tensioners addressed... While there won't be many service records with 4500 miles, any bike/engine mods should have good documentation...

Good luck with your search...

Definitely want to have the Cam Tensioners checked out and probably the first advice given when it comes to the Deuce. That being said, absolutely love my 02 Deuce and haven't found anything I enjoy riding more.
If you buy it, give this thread an update with some photos
