Took bike out today for 2nd time this year and ran out of gas. Bought 2005 soft tail deluxe last year and gauge was always accurate. Any quick fix for gauge?
Reading was full. I haven't filled it yet but it went right back to full. I've never lifted the tank.
Trying to clarify your statement.
"Reading was full"... Guessing that you mean the gas gauge was reading full when you ran out of gas.
"I haven't filled it yet but it went right back to full." What does that mean? Does it mean that needle never went down and always stayed on FULL?
If you have not filled tank then it is really difficult to isolate if tank is really empty or near empty and it is an unknown how far you rode on a full tank before shut off.
Can you see fuel in the tank?
We can not see the bike and really have minimal information to work on in order to provide an educated guess.
What did you do when you ran out of gas if you did not fill the tank?
Yes gauge read full when I ran out. Needle goes down only when bike is turned off. I got ride to gas station was only able to get one gallon. Put that in tank and bike started right up and gauge reading went from empty to full with only one gallon in. I'll fill it tomorrow and see what happens to gauge then.
Thanks,
Fritz
From my experience, Harley fuel gauges are worthless. Go but the trip meter.
on my dyna, the gauge reads between empty and 1/4 tank any time after 50 miles. I can easily ride 130 miles before I really need to start looking for fuel.
but its possible from sitting all winter that your float/ sending unit couldve gotten stuck.
