Softail Deluxe Clutch Cable Adjustment
I have a couple of questions about adjusting the clutch cable on my 2009 Softail Deluxe. I hope you guys can help.
My Softail came back from the dealer after getting a 50k service with a bit of sloppy slack in my clutch cable, at the lever. I want to tighten it up a bit. I am no mechanic but I want to learn to do some of this stuff myself.
The external cable adjuster seems to be opened up about as far as it can unscrew, but I know how to do the adjustments there.
My question has to do with removing the derby cover and adjusting the cable internally.
First, is a clutch inspection cover and a derby cover the same thing? (Be nice, I am just learning how to work on my Harley)
Secondly, can I remove the clutch inspection cover and adjust the cable there, without losing fluid and without having to replace the fluid? Can I re-use the same derby cover gasket after making the adjustments?
Finally, my Softail uses Synthetic motor oil. Is that the same fluid that is lubricating my clutch, behind the derby cover?
Thanks for your help, and your patience with my newb questions.
Russell.
1) The slop, or free play, at the lever. You do this by adjusting the cable length. This is done using the adjuster located under the accordion cover on the cable.
2) Adjusting the clutch itself by removing the derby cover.
Advice:
YouTube is your friend, watch some videos. There are plenty out there! I like Delboy's garage. He is very thorough and good at explaining things.
Get a good service manual and the proper tools as well!
Good luck and ride safe 😀
