!
the RPM that you're not lugging the engine.
Me personally for "my" riding style, it depends on traffic.
Little to no traffic putts, 22-2500 rpm .
Traffic, I prefer a little higher in 2700-2900 range to have more guts if needed to rip around something.
It's improper to set a specific RPM for any given riding scenario....
To avoid lugging the engine, is a function of both RPM, load, and gear......
Going 2000 RPM, 2-up, fully loaded in 6th gear could be fine coming down the back side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains...
Going solo, uphill, into a headwind at 3000 rpm in 5th gear could be too low...
Ignore the tac, learn to listen to the engine, it is continually "hinting" at how it's feeling... it will tell you if you need to downshift...
If you listen to it instead of constantly staring at the tac, you'll learn what it's telling you. Then you'll be able to downshift at the "hints", instead of waiting for it to yell at you to downshift...

High engine temps, and lugging are the worst conditions for my oil cooled M8 107" I use my Power Commander to read engine temps, knock events, and Map, and have found that under the above mentioned conditions spark knock is for the most part minimized by a combination of.... richer fuel mixture, a couple of degrees of timing retard, and keeping RPM up above 2500. What my experience tells me is that because the softail 107s are oil cooled that the faster you spin it, the more the oil flows. The more the oil flows, the cooler the engine runs!!!
From a NYC guy - you'll learn your bike without looking at the tach... Just dont lug it..
Exactly. The only reason my old 2002 Fat Boy has a tach is because I had an HD speedo/tach combo installed many years ago. Looks cool but was kind of a waste of time & money as far as practicality goes. I already knew how to ride the bike without lugging it.
