Default Heritage Springer voltage regulator change?

I’m changing out my voltage regulator on a 2003 Heritage Springer and trying to figure out the easiest way to access the power lead terminal that sits between the battery and rear wheel.
I’ve pulled the battery but looks to me I will need to pull the rear wheel and back splash cover unless I’m missing something.
The facts service manual doesn’t address what needs to be removed to access the terminal.
Getting hot out the garage, has anyone had easier luck getter to the terminal?
thx

Thumbs up

You should be able to take out 2, 1/4" bolts at the lower side of the back splash cover then the cover will slide down to the ground and you can get to your plug.

There are two methods I've used for getting behind that splash cover... I removed mine to replace the VSS. It has a connector back there too.

One is to remove the rear tire, and it will truly give you more room to "work"...

The second is you just remove the bottom two screws attaching the cover. (IIRC, these are the only two screws, but double check. I believe the top part of the cover is hooked on...) and then slide the cover up, behind the tire and place it on top of the rear tire... This will open up that area behind the splash guard, but it can be tight in there with the rear wheel still attached...

I have never changed out the VR on my 2003 Heritage... and am not familiar with the wiring. I didn't know it has a wire connecting it behind that rear tire splash guard.

Here is a picture of the area behind that splash guard with the rear tire still on.... If the wire you are referencing is the one I have marked with a green arrow, you should be able to replace it with the rear tire in place, and the splash guard slid up out of the way....

BUT... it is tight... so make sure to disconnect your battery, so you don't accidentally ground out one of those power wire terminals...

NOTE: Boothillkeeter answered while I was typing.... He is correct, but as I mentioned, I like to slide the cover up on top of the tire to get it out of my way... He confirmed my memory that there are only two screws...

Yep, the Hotwire lead or what ever it’s called that you have the green arrow pointing to is exactly what I’m looking to get at, I’ll give it a try before I remove the wheel.
thanks for the info!
