Just a thought, but an HD oil cooler only costs a couple hundred bucks....a small price to pay in my opinion versus the cost of an engine.

Maybe should have posted this in another thread, but I trust you fellow softtail guys so here goes.

I am running my 06 with Amsoil in all three holes, have a tuned PCIII, pipes, SE A/C kit. My running temp per the dip stick guage today after running about60-70 miles at 90 - 95 degrees was 225. May have gotten close to 230. Mostly all highway riding.

Is this about right for my set up and riding conditions? The reason I ask is b/c I have read some guys running at 200 - 210, but when the temp gets over 90, I can't keep mine below 220. Just want to make sure I'm safe.
I'm using a different synthetic oil and a cooler on my FLHX, but mine stays at around 200-205° (measured in the pan) as long as I'm moving at highway speeds. It'll creep up in heavy traffic, but 230° is the highest I've seen, hitting that high only twice so far this summer. I have leaned my PCIII considerably in the take-off and cruises range to improve mileage, and that makes my oil temperatures higher than they could be. I have a Multi-function Hub and map switch for the PCIII and can switch on the fly between this lean map and a much richer map to cool things down in traffic, but I rarely use the latter map.

If you don't already have a cooler you should seriously consider it, as I think all TC's should have one installed. You should see a 20°+ drop with one installed.

so stage 1 will lower engine oil temps? is it a pretty dramatic difference? another way to justify pipes!

I have not seen over 225 on my FXSTC on days in the 90's ... Running SYN3 in all three holes now.

I think my temp is running pretty normal, but if I see temps over 230 (which I never have) on a consistent basis, then I may adjust my fuel map. If that doesn't help, I would look to an oil cooler.

I run Red Line, a PCIII, and my temps according to my super accurate HD oven thermometer in the oil bag says I run 215-225 depending on traffic and ambient temps. I've never seen it over 225° even on days over 100°

I suspect that the average oil temp stick is not as accurate as we might all prefer to believe. Anyway, I have never heard of anyone who believes their engine was ruined by any temp it ran at, whether summer or winter, high or low altitutude. I have been on my '06 Deluxe for little over a year now, doing a lot of riding within NYC. That means lots of stop and go, bumper to bumper. I have never shut the bike down at the side of the road -as some riders do when temp goes to 250. I am using the standard HD oil. I think that all one might do if concerned about engine temp is to put on one of the higher flow filters, the metal ones that you wash out and reuse. Seems to me that anything else will do too little while ruining the look of the bike. But certainly, before going out and spending money and time and bringing on board another item that could go bad, verify the accuracy of your temp gauge. Many will be surprised.
