Haley night train
Hello good people Hey I have. A Harley 2006 night train with some issue I just bought this and the guy told me all I needed was a battery. And some greasy fuel. We tried to start it it spit and shuddered So now I bought. Come to find out it needed a fuel. Ok let’s get one. Installed it. Fired up running great Let it warm up then I’ll do the 3- oil changes. And get it ready to hit the pavement Lol. Well as I looked down at the Speedo. I see I’m doing a 120 mph in neutral,, lol and i shut it off. And start it back up and bam I’m 120mph again in neutral,, then I notice my miles on the Speedo are adding up fast. And this bike isn’t even moving, can anyone help me with this ?
Sounds like it might be the speed sensor. What are the symptoms of a faulty speed sensor? Found this from a previous post. Google HD speed sensor testing and there are a few YouTube videos. Good luck
5 Common Bad Speed Sensor Symptoms
5 Common Bad Speed Sensor Symptoms
- Transmission problems. ...
- Erratic speedometer readings. ...
- Inability to engage cruise control. ...
- Lack of torque converter clutch application. ...
- Check Engine Light is triggered. ...
- An internal electrical fault in the speed sensor. ...
- Damage on the sensor itself. ...
- Poor vehicle maintenance.
Afternoon. What I don’t understand Is why is it adding miles to my bike and I haven’t even road it yet ? I don’t understand how the Speed sensor can add miles to the odometer and the bike just sits there
The speed sensor reads the RPM of the transmission output sprocket electronically and sends that information to the computer and speedometer.
While a bad speed sensor can show an erratic reading on the speedometer, that usually means if you are cruising at 65mph, the speedometer will show 65, then 45, then 55, then 65, etc..
If your transmission output sprocket isn't moving, like when the bike is stationary, I don't see how a VSS could affect what the speedometer is showing.... If I'm wrong, I hope someone will correct me and educate me on this...
My first suspect would be the speedometer itself... but...
Anytime I have an electrical issue, I first check the battery condition, and the battery cables. Don't forget the ground wire where it connects to the frame. A loose connection, weak battery, or just about any electrical glitch can cause all sorts of weird stuff to happen, and will often throw many, unrelated codes....
Once I confirm a good power source, I check for codes. I write them down, clear them, and then see if they return...
Hopefully that will lead you to a possible problem...
If no codes, because the issue presents when the bike is running, but stationary, I would then check out the connections to the speedo, the speedo, and eventually the ECM ....
Good luck with your diagnosis... keep us posted...
