If I import from the US I've found it is much simpler to do it through E-bays Global shipping program, you get the costs up-front, don't get charged a collection fee as the Post Office do and it's not held up whilst they collect the fee!
Basically if it requires import duty you will have to pay that and then VAT on top, the shipping cost is also included in these calculations! The $ to Ł exchange rate is not good at this time but slowly improving!
