Default 08 flstc front fork oil

Manual calls for fork oil to be measured by height, how critical is that compared to just adding what it calls for by lq. volume.
just want to say this forum is a great site, I have had great advice from the Harley folks.
Thanx

I've done it both ways and everything worked well. That said, measuring the oil level height is the best and proper way to ensure the oil level is correct. Notice that the manual says to add more oil than specified in the manual table 2-16 (in my 2013 HD Touring manual) and then remove the excess. Also note that you are instructed to pump the fork to get more of the oil out when draining, and again to get air out of the lower parts when refilling.

If you over fill by very much, the bike will not handle correctly and you could easily blow out the fork seals. So measuring the oil level is the best method to ensure that does not happen. Also note that the manual says to disassemble the forks and inspect bushings etc for wear.

As an aside, the later fork sliders (49mm) do not have drain screws. Perhaps they removed them so you couldn't just drain the oil and fill back without disassembling the forks. You have to take the forks apart and pour the oil from the top plug.

"All touring models, with the exception of FLHR/C, have a
damper valve type fork on both sides. FLHR/C uses the conventional
type fork on both sides. Always follow the correct
step for the fork type being serviced.
1. Remove fork spring from fork tube.
2. Pour slightly more TYPE 'E' HYDRAULIC FORK OIL directly
into the fork tube than is specified in Table 2-16.
3. Slowly pump fork tube until some resistance is felt and
then pump a few more times"

Ok cool, I'm replacing a fork due to an accident, bought the fork tube already assembled, just have to put it together with the bottom part, I can make a fixture to release the pressure of the spring instead of putting it back on the bike to loosen then take off again, I'm a machinist/ fabricator making jigs n fixtures is no sweat. Will do the oil by manual spec last thing is don't want blown seal or under fluid lol.
Thanx
