I've always used a load balancer right away so I've never had any trouble. But I guess it makes sense that the brake light would be OK because it doesn't auto flash.

My understanding is you will need a current limiting resistor.
You can use an LED for the taillight without needing a load equalizer. You will need the equalizer if you change out the turn signal bulbs for LEDs on a 2010 Fat Boy Lo.
While an LED bulb will generally be brighter than the stock incandescent bulb, you can also replace your taillight with one of our LED assemblies -- these will be significantly brighter.
