Default Starting hiccup?

Starting hiccup? For the past few weeks my heritage has been giving me a little problem starting. It starts, runs for 5 to 10 seconds and dies, it does this 2 or three times and then starts and runs perfect. There is NO check engine light.
It never did this before, the only thing i did was change the 3 oil holes. Its a 2002 heritage with fuel injection. Any ideas?

could be a couple of things, fuel injectors might need cleaning. In that case you could just get some cleaner and put it in your next tank of gas, It also could be a hole in the fuel lines inside the tank going to the fuel pump. For that you would have to take your console off, drain your tank and check those lines. It could also be a bad tank of gas, need new spark plugs, coil could be going out, spark plug wires, or battery. First I would get some injector cleaner and check the plugs and probably replace them. if that didnt work I would then get some new wires, and have a parts store check the battery on there testing machine, after that I would check the lines to the fuel pump in the tank and check the coil. If that all fails I really dont know.

I always enjoy helping someone with a similar problem that I have had. Mine was diagnosed by the HDealer just before Sturgis. My symptoms were that it would die going down the road and then not want to start. Just die at highway speeds. Seemed like it would take an hour or so for it to seemingly cool down before starting. During that time it would turn over but not fire. It had no spark at the plug wire. Did you test for spark on starting?? Do you know how to do that on the bike?? Anyway, I replaced the coil but that wasn't the problem. Problem ended up being the ECM Electronic Control Module. It's purpose is to energize the System Relay (under the seat) which closes the circuit to the coil, fuel pump, and fuel injectors. See, if it is on the blink, it won't send spark and nothing happens. Not sure what all you have going on there because you haven't said your status on some of those problems but you may not know the extent just yet. My check engine light was coming on right after the bike started and staying on for abou 10 seconds and then going out. Their machine picked up on the "code" P1001 and my problem ended up being $500 and some change. But 2500 miles to Sturgis and back trouble free since. Let me know. It does sound like it isn't necessarily consistent in the starting process so maybe your ECM may be defective. That is a spendy bugger to just replace on a whim plus it has to be programmed to your bike which is just about a stealer item.

I've got the exact same issue with my 07 with a Thundermax on it. I've got the ability to monitor with the T-Maxx and pulled some monitor logs and sent them to Randy at Zippers. He noted that my TPS was out of spec at 129 when the range should be 74-125. He also noted that my raw throttle position was 9.68 degrees which he noted that it seemed low. His suggestion was to check the throttle blade adjustment and/or check the throttle cables. I checked with the service manager at the dealer I teach at and he noted that the TPS sensor is not adjustable. I'm still working through this but in my case, the issue looks to be mechanical.

One thing that works on my bike is when it starts to cough, I blip the throttle once or twice and the idle smooths right out. This may work for you or it may not but that leads me to believe it is mechanical and not ECM....

I'll start with the easy things you guys said first and work my way up. I checked the plugs, they have about 5000 miles on them. They look good, very light tan with a darker tan as it goes down. I just put a new tank of gas in it with some injector cleaner. I'll give it a few days and see if it helps. I went down to the dealer to get new plug wires but i forgot he's closed on Mondays. The battery is a little over a year old and checks good on my tester. Thanks for the help, I'll let you guys know in a few days.

Well it's still giving me a little problem starting, It starts runs for a few seconds and dies, it does this 2 or 3 times then runs perfect. I did try toblip throttle, butit still dies. The check engine light is NOT on.

This is what i did so far.

I went through 2 tanks of gas, so i don't think it's the gas.
I put in half a bottle of injector cleaner. The bottle said "one bottle for 10 gals."
I put in new spark plugs
I put new SE spark plug wires.
The battery checked good on a tester.

Maybe I'm worried about nothing?
