Yes I'm having problems figuring out why my running light on the right side of my 99 Softail custom isn't working. Also my blinkers won't flash. New bulb in running light, found some raw wires from rubbing of the tire fixed them but still can't get them to work. Any advice or something I'm missing?
I am going to assume the lights on your '99 Softail work the same as the stock lights on my 2012 Heritage.
On a stock Softail, the front turn signals are running lights and turn signals. The rear turn signals are only turn signals, NOT running lights. Since the front turn signals act as running lights and turn signals, they use a DOUBLE filament bulb (1157). The rear turn signals, as only turn signals and not running lights, use a SINGLE filament bulb (1156).
For the rear to work as running lights, brake lights and turn signals you need a special harness put into the rear turn signal circuit. The amber turn signal lens would have to be changed to red also.
Questions:
1. Are your turn signals stock?
2. Did you replace the rear turn signal bulb with the correct one. It should be an 1156 and will NOT work as a running light. Are you absolutely sure it was a running light or did you think it should be one but wasn't?
Now let's get to the turn signals function. You stated "my blinkers won't flash". Just the right rear? All four of them? You have to be specific. We aren't there to see for ourselves. Is the turn signal indicator on the dash flashing fast?
I would first make sure you are using the correct bulb.
They are stock turn signals and they are both running lights and turn signals. And it's all four of them, they will come on but won't flash. And I might have got the wrong bulb since you mentioned it the kind it is. I will go get and different bulb and try that for the running light to work. Still baffled on the blinkers not flashing.
If you look at the turn signal bulb, there are two tabs on the side of the metal housing. if they are aligned it is an 1156 bulb. if they are offset, it is an 1157 bulb. You cannot interchange the bulbs.
i don't want to doubt you but I can't recall the rear turn signals on a stock Harley Softail ever functioning as running lights. if the bulb is an 1156 it cannot be a running light. It can only be a turn signal bulb.
As far as the turn signals not working you may want to recheck the wire repair under the fender.
