I have a new 07 fatboy with 1600 mile. I want to change to engine oil to Amsoil 20/50 for cooling reasons. Can I just drain the old oil out and replace with Amsoil without changing the filter? The oil and filter was changed at 1000 miles.
That will be fine. Don't overfill the tank though. After draining, I'd add about 2-1/2 quarts, start the bike and let it warm up, then shut it off and check the oil and add as much as necessary.
I would wait till it got to 2000 and change the filter along with the oil.
I did the first oil change at 1000 and went to Syn3 in all three holes, but I'm a bit parinoid about new engines and the loose bits of crap they often seem to have in them from the manufacturing process.
So I changedtheoil and filteragain at 3000. But this time I used Mobil 1 20/50W for V-Twins in the engine and primary, and Mobil 1 75/90W in the tranny. Its rated better than Syn3, a bit cheaper, and I can get it at any Auto Zone.
