Digital technician 2 that you mention will it work on older bike, there saying whatever they are using wont work.
Apparently the tool they needed just arrived this morning, that fine i just wish it had not been sitting there for a month
Your dealer likely already had the Digital Technician II. I suspect what they didn't have, and needed to locate, was the correct cable that connects the DTII to your 2011 4 pin data link connector. 2011 was the last year for the 4 pin DLC. In 2012 the DLC was changed to 6 pin.
This is a big concern for keeping these newer bikes long term. I have often wondered what happens when a sensor goes out on a 20 year old bike? Will Harley still have parts for us? Will the aftermarket have all the sensors needed? Should we be buying spares now?
I could be wrong, but dealers who are not servicing older bikes are probably not paying their service techs very much, and consequently they can’t keep any older experienced techs with solid Evo and TC skill sets. So their tech lineup is basically a bunch of fresh MMI graduates with M8 focus and a couple classes on TCs. They can’t work on older bikes because their techs aren’t qualified or experienced.

This is going to be the issue going forward, its kinda sad really - something as simple as a Motorcycle and whats going to be the end for it is an electrical part. the days of make a mechanical part - test it out, tweak it and youre on your way - are over, My Son in law has my old 02 Heritage & has been having a stall when coming to stop (warmed up) & hard to start again issue, he is in Texas on state side deployment so its tough to help by phone, a lot of items He is trying to get are discontinued through Harley & one has to wonder if its profitable enough for the aftermarket to keep making them???
The TSM/TSSM comes to mind for the older bikes - I believe you can go aftermarket with this part but for how long.............. what a shame, I know guys with 20+ year old bikes with low miles & to think an obsolete component will turn it into junk?
Finally got it back today seems to be working okay . I have no problem with techs not wanting to work mechanically on older bikes, but this was a software issue and around here i had no other options other than the Harley Dealer.
Seem to recall you can jump it and get it running. Wire around it for your start.
What I did to my 04 Tacoma 4X4 when the ECM circuit that received the Crank sensor signal and sent the fuel pump relay coil to ground kicking it on.
I just jumped the relay straight thru. I added a LED vote meter light to it. Now when I key to on, I get a fuel pump on. The ECM also has another ground for coil relay.
That one is still fine. But I add another LED to is coil relay so I know it's working.
Your definitely going to need the OEM service and electric diagnostic manuals to study what each wire does for sure.

I don't need one..... yet.... But I am unaware of an aftermarket TSM/TSSM for early twin cams. If you know of one, I'd love to know who makes it for future reference....
the question is what spares should we buy? What are you buying? Thanks
for my `99 RK
Crank sensor
Stator / Rotor
Coil / Voltage regulator
Clutch & Throttle cables
Solenoid rebuild kit
M/C and caliper rebuild kits
Take off Ign. module as I`m using a Twin Tec
Take off cylinders and heads
Which means I will NOT need any of them !
BUT ! in 10 or 15 years when I`m hanging up my boots and the whipper-snapper looking to buy say`s "Gramps this thing is worthless cause you can`t get parts!" I`ll just laugh !
+ it makes me happy , knowing they`re on the shelf
Let`s be polite and call it a "quirk"
