Default Fatboy fuel injection question

I live in Northern Wisconsin, and in a few weeks it will snow. Currently I have a 98 Fat Boy me and my buddy built from the frame up. This winter I want a new project so I am looking for suggestions on the best early early year fuel injected Fat Boy. I know there were huge issues and some change over and such, A buddy of mine said the 2008 Fat Boy engine is bullet proof. So What early years would ya'll suggest? Not asking to buy anyone's just lookin for direction on what to look for.

IMHO, the '98 EVO engine is certainly a very good engine... no engine is bulletproof, but the EVO was a very solid engine platform. I had an '89 Heritage that ran well, with no issues.

The Softail models got fuel injection in 2001. That was on the 88" Twin Cam engines.

The good news, again IMHO, is that was the first year for the Delphi EFI system. Softails never had the Magnetti Marelli EFI. The MM EFI was good in its day, but I don't think it is as good as the Delphi, it's harder to get parts for, and harder to find people well versed in it's repair.

The early Delphi EFI was an all open loop system. They did not have any O2 sensor feedback. The Delphi EFI with partial closed loop/partial open loop tunes, and OEM O2 sensor feedback came around in 2007, on the then new 96" Twin Cam engines.

So the biggest decisions for Softail EFI bikes are what size engine do you want, and/or do you feel you need the O2 sensor feedback with the EFI...

FWIW...
I have an '03 Heritage with the open loop Delphi ECM. It's a 95" big bore, with headwork and A26 cams. It was dyno tuned after the build and runs really well. I also have two bikes with the Delphi EFI and O2 sensor feedback. One stage one and the other with an S&S 124" crate engine. Both have very good tunes and also run really well.

Technically, the O2 sensor feedback is better, but on a street driven bike, I'm not sure I really notice the difference... I wouldn't avoid buying an early twi cam EFI just because it doesn't have O2 sensor feedback...

Good luck with your search...
