Picked up a 98 Heritage

Based on age reworking the carb is a good idea. But that exhaust is not the easiest to tune correctly. There are better choices out there that are much easier to get setup right.

I picked up a 1998 Heritage Classic, bike has 30K on it, and is basically stock outside of the beat up V&H straight shot exhaust. The bike runs crappy, has a bad off idle pop, it smells lean Im beginning to wonder if anyone jetted the carb for the exhaust. Anyway the carb will be coming off. Its unfortunately leaking on both base gaskets, typical Evo, other than that the only other gripe is the shift linkage is sloppy and the heel toe shift wobbles all over.
Smart move pulling the carb... If it's OEM it's a Keihin CV40 carb. I like them and have had two bikes with them. They are much better than their Keihin predecessors, like the butterfly carb family...
It'll be easy to rebuild and tune..
Every bike is different, and an EVO is a different engine family than a Twi Cam, but.... FWIW....
I bought a 2001 Twin Cam with a CV40 carb. I added an SE Stage I intake, and Vance & Hines Straight Shot exhaust (like the one you have). I pulled the carb, rebuilt it, and I installed it with new seals. I didn't need to re-jet, I kept the OEM 45/190 jets, switched to a CV Performance needle, and pulled the plug off the mixture screw. I dialed in that combination with just the mixture screw.
I was able to tune that carb so the bike runs excellent. No decel popping, and it fires right up...

Great bike and the best years for evo's. Enjoy.
